Lightweight equipment, carefully controlled

Resistance band exercises for kids—with safety and balance built in

Bands can help children practice controlled strength movements without a room full of weights. Start with light resistance, inspect every band, teach the setup, and choose movements a child can perform smoothly.

Safety before repetitions

Six resistance band rules for families

A stretched band stores energy. Children should learn that it is exercise equipment, not a toy to snap, fling, or wrap around another person.

Check the band

Look and feel for cuts, thin areas, discoloration, cracking, or damaged handles. Retire a questionable band instead of testing it under tension.

Start lighter

The right band allows a smooth path and stable posture. If the child must jerk, twist, lean, or shorten the movement, resistance is too high.

Protect the face

Do not aim bands toward the eyes or stretch them close to the face. Avoid setups where a slipped foot or hand would send the band upward.

Use secure anchors

Only use anchors designed for bands and installed correctly. Do not loop a band over a door handle, sharp edge, or unstable furniture.

Control both directions

Return slowly instead of allowing the band to pull the body back. The return is part of the exercise.

Supervise

An adult should demonstrate the grip and position, maintain clear spacing, and stop any use that becomes playful or unsafe.

Beginner-friendly exercises for the whole body

These movements are available when resistance bands are enabled in the app. The band should remain controlled and the child should be able to breathe normally throughout each exercise.

Child demonstrating resistance band squats
Lower body

Band squats

Stand evenly on the band, keep hands secure near the shoulders, and sit back to a comfortable depth with knees following the toes.

Back

Band rows

Use a stable setup, pull elbows back without shrugging, pause briefly, and return slowly. Keep the chest comfortably lifted.

Child demonstrating a resistance band overhead press
Shoulders

Overhead press

Use very light resistance, press without arching the lower back, and stop if the band cannot travel smoothly overhead.

Posture

Pull-aparts

Hold the band below shoulder height and gently widen the hands while keeping ribs down. Do not stretch near the face.

Child demonstrating resistance band bicep curls
Arms

Bicep curls

Pin the elbows near the sides, curl without swinging, and lower under control. Both feet should remain planted on the band.

Hip hinge

Good mornings

Practice the hip hinge without a band first. Keep the spine long, soften the knees, and use a small controlled range.

Sample beginner session

A balanced 20-minute band circuit

Resistance-band exercises should not fill every minute of the workout. Warm up without the band, alternate body areas, place coordination or rest between demanding exercises, and finish with band-free mobility and stretching.

For a first session, focus on learning each position. Ten careful repetitions are not automatically better than six: stop the set when posture changes or the band begins controlling the child. Use lighter resistance for overhead work and any unfamiliar movement.

  • Allow enough distance that stretched bands cannot touch another child.
  • Keep the band away from shoes with sharp edges or rough flooring.
  • Never stretch a band farther than the manufacturer recommends.
  • Store bands away from direct sunlight, heat, pets, and young children.

Using bands with different ages

Each child needs an individual resistance choice

Band colors are not standardized across manufacturers, so color alone does not tell you how challenging a band will be. Test the exact band and exercise. A band that feels easy during a row may still be too strong for an overhead press or lateral raise.

Younger children can practice the movement without resistance first. When they can follow directions and maintain control, use the lightest appropriate band with direct supervision. Older children may progress through slightly more resistance, a slower return, or additional controlled repetitions—but only one change at a time.

If a child has an injury, joint concern, movement restriction, or medical condition, seek individualized guidance from an appropriate qualified professional before adding resistance exercise.

Good resistance

The child should be able to…

  • Begin and finish the movement without help from momentum.
  • Keep a stable grip and comfortable joint position.
  • Move through the planned range without shaking or straining.
  • Return to the start slowly and deliberately.
  • Stop immediately and release tension safely when asked.

Common questions

Resistance band FAQ

What resistance band weight should a child use?

There is no single weight for an age. Start with the lightest band and judge the child’s control during that specific movement. Manufacturer labels differ, and different exercises need different resistance.

Can siblings share one band?

They can use the same piece of equipment at different times if the resistance suits both, but two children should not pull opposite ends or improvise partner exercises unless the activity is specifically designed and supervised for that use.

How do I add bands to a BodeeFit routine?

Open BodeeFit settings, find Equipment & Content, and turn on resistance bands. The routine generator can then include band exercises while maintaining warmup, variety, recovery, and cooldown.
